Dr. Junichi Yamada is the Senior Special Advisor in Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Before this current position, he supervised the overall strategy and operations of JICA as Director General of Strategy Department, JICA.

 

He had been involved with Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) to Myanmar as Second Secretary of Japanese Embassy in Yangon during 1986-89 .

 

In Japan, he seconded to Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1986 and handled Japan’s ODA to Myanmar.

 

Dr. Yamada’s academic background is Ph.D. from University of Malaya (Economics) in 1996 and Master Degree from University of Tokyo (Urban Planning) in 1982. He wrote some books such as “Japanese Official Development Assistance in Southeast Asia” ISIS Malaysia, 1997, which includes Japan’s economic contribution to Myanmar.

 

Brief profile of JICA in Myanmar

The government of Japan changed its economic cooperation policy to Myanmar in April 2012. JICA is working to ascertain the needs for infrastructure to promote economic development, in addition to the conventional fields of cooperation such as improving BHN and capacity along with providing assistance to minority ethnic groups. Specifically, JICA will implement an economic reform program as assistance to reform the economy through capacity development. JICA is also planning to provide cooperation for urban development in Yangon including Thilawa SEZ Development, along with port and transportation network infrastructure, as support that will lead to economic growth.

 

During Japanese fiscal year 2013, JICA has provided 51 billion Japanese yen in form of loan and 10 billion Japanese yen in form of grant.
